Baltimore, MD – The Baltimore City Department of Transportation today announces the addition of new automated enforcement locations, as part of the City’s Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES).  

Baltimore’s ATVES uses automated speed, red light, and Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System cameras to promote safe driving habits in our City.  This program is designed to increase safety by reducing driver speeds in school zones, decrease the incidence of vehicles running red lights, and for commercial vehicles, reducing traffic congestion and damage to streets, homes, businesses, and other infrastructure on posted (signed) streets.

The block ranges and intersections listed for all locations below are approximations for the enforcement zones.  Enforcement at all locations may be on a temporary, rotating, or permanent basis.

The speed camera monitoring system consists of portable and fixed speed cameras that detect and cite those vehicles which exceed the posted speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour.  Photos and video are taken from the rear of the vehicle.  All current and previously advertised speed cameras can be moved within the half mile radius of the school zone.  Speed cameras operate in Baltimore City school zones, Monday through Friday, from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, all year.   The speed camera violation fine is $40.00 as prescribed by State Law. 

Implementation will begin on October 15, 2019 at the following locations, including multiple directions:

• 3000 to 3700 blk Garrison Blvd – Liberty Elementary School
• 2400 to 2800 blk North Dukeland Street – Bard High School - Early College, ConneXions School
• 2700 to 3400 blk West North Avenue – KIPP Academy, Belmont Elementary School
• 2500 to 3300 blk Federal Street – Fort Worthington Elementary/ Middle School
• 4000 to 5100 blk Alameda – Walter P. Carter Elementary School
• 400 to 1000 blk East Preston Street – Johnston Square Elementary School
• 2800 to 3200 blk Loch Raven Blvd – Abbottson Elementary School  

The red light camera monitoring system consists of stationary cameras that use sensors working in conjunction with traffic control signals to record images of motor vehicles entering an intersection during a red light signal phase.  Photos and videos are taken from the rear of the vehicle with the red light signal visible, both before the vehicle enters the intersection and while it is traveling through it.  The red light enforcement cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the fine is $75.00 as prescribed by State Law.

• Harford Road NB/SB @ Echodale Avenue
• Wilkens Avenue EB/WB @ Brunswick Street 
• Monument Street EB @ Haven Street
• Perring Parkway NB/SB @ Woodbourne Avenue
• York Road NB/SB @ Woodbourne Avenue

The Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System camera is used to record images of commercial vehicles traveling on a truck restricted (posted/signed) roadway in Baltimore City.  The vehicle’s height conveys to the monitoring system that the vehicle passing the camera is a truck. When a truck is detected by the camera system, photos and video are taken of the vehicle from the front in order to capture the registration identification of the vehicle’s cab. Vehicle height monitoring systems cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year, where posted (signed) unless the truck restriction being enforced is of limited duration. 

The fine for a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring system violation is: First Offense – Warning, Second Offense - $125.00, Third or Subsequent Offenses - $250.00 each

Implementation will begin on October 15, 2019 for a Commercial Truck Overheight Monitoring System at the following location, including multiple directions:

• 3000 blk of East Preston Street
